The project

For this project, we provided architectural design, Principal Designer: CDM and Principal Designer: Building Regulations services, working closely with the client, Holden Grange Care Group, alongside the wider design team and contractor.

The historic building on Crossbeck Road, originally opened in 1864 as the Trout Beck Hydro, was once a hotel and welcomed guests such as King Charles and even hosted live music in its famous ballroom, including a short appearance by Jimi Hendrix before being converted into a residential care home.

The project involved the full refurbishment and extensive reconfiguration of the existing residential home, creating fifty en-suite bedrooms for residents. Existing features were thoughtfully restored, with interior finishes complementing the original building while delivering a stylish, luxury environment for residents and staff alike.

New communal spaces were created to promote a sense of community, alongside areas for quiet relaxation, including a new bar and lounge areas plus dining and activity spaces.

The works also included upgrades to ensure the building meets current regulations, including fire compartmentation and fire stopping, thermal improvements and improved accessibility.

Externally, the gardens were fully landscaped, featuring new resin bound gravel walkways, water features, soft landscaping and outdoor seating areas, creating a beautiful setting for residents to enjoy.
